LEAGUE VOTE: DL slots, the off-season, and you!

Post by #4 Yawkey Way 2 on Wed Jan 02, 2008 8:54 pm

So how DL slots and rosters will be handled in the off-season is something that we haven't had to think about until now.

There are three schools of thought here, and we need to hash this out and have a league vote on the matter.

    Option one:

Off-season roster size increases to 28. Players may be added via uneven trades or by minor-league call-ups. Any moves making rosters exceed 28 players require a drop.

If a major league player finished the MLB regular season on Yahoo's MLB Disabled List you can keep him on your DL throughout the off-season, but your roster is not to exceed 28 players (active or not).

However, you will have to get your roster down to 25 players by the roster deadline. (this season the roster deadline is March 18, 2008 - aka one week before the first regular season game)

    Option two:

Current system: Off-season roster size stays at 25, DL players need to be counted as active roster.

Even if a major league player finishes the MLB regular season on Yahoo's MLB Disabled List, you have to carry them on your 25-man active roster during the off-season, trade them to a team with active roster room, or cut them, after the MLB regular season / SSD Smack Series concludes.

    Option three:

Off-season roster size increases to 28. Players may be added via uneven trades or by minor-league call-ups. Any moves making rosters exceed 28 players require a drop.

If a major league player finished the MLB regular season on Yahoo's MLB Disabled List you can keep him on your DL throughout the off-season, but your roster is not to exceed 28 players (active or not).

Also, players on the long-term DL that are likely to start the following season on the DL, may remain rostered in a DL slot (e.g. Joel Zumaya, Chris Carpenter, Chris Ray, etc.) or have their rights retained by the owning GM, while still having 25 active players going in to the following season.

Meaning: GMs could, theoretically, carry a full compliment of 25 active players while carrying up to three long-term DL players into the following season of play.

Im okay with option 3...but who/how do we determine who is a 'long term' DL guy?? Zoom, Carpenter, Ray, etc are obvious now...but if someone is questionable (ie Nick Johnson) how do we handle that? This question was brought up by BL in the chatroom. The potential exists for people to pick up 'DL' guys at the end of the season and carry them through to next season.

I do, however, think its fair to carry guys like the aforementioned on a DL slot through to the following season.

That's where the difficulty lies. Since it's not clear-cut, I personally prefer option 1.

Option #3, because it's exactly the way it's supposed to be, and it's the way it is when the season starts/is in play.

Personally, trying to circumvent situations is bullshit...I voted for #2.

If this is the deal you guys want to make, why not have salty pick rasmus and then make the trade. It will side step all this....

i picked #1, but only providing that it pertains to next offseason and beyond, right now I think 25 should be the max.

Also i don''t see a problem with uneven trades where for example the manager getting 2 players would have to cut someone to the FA pool to keep at 25 and the manager receiving one player would have to live with 24 players until season start up at which point (like we do in my league) that team would be assigned the lowest YAHOO! ranked player until they made their own add/drop.

So the commishes got together and, taking into account all of the feedback received from you guys up until now, decided that at least for year 1 drafts and pre-season, we're going to make all moves MLB for MLB and MiLB for MiLB, there-by making the current trade void.

Yawkey and TMS are re-working their deal currently.

We will vote later on possibly expanding off-season MLB rosters to 28 with a roster deadline, et al. and for now, we can consider all of these issues closed.

We will stick with the current system, of 25 man off-season roster w/o special consideration for those on long-term DL.

Thank you all for your patience and assistance with this process!

I will leave this thread and poll open, however, and we can point to the issues discussed here for future seasons!
